Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I believe that our final film opening has strongly developed from the preliminary task because our knowledge and understanding has improved dramatically. In the preliminary task our understanding of camera shots and angles where non- existent which meant that the whole scene felt low quality and was boring. I was not very confident about using final cut which is the software we used to edit the scene which meant that it used the basic cuts and editing.

In this task we have developed our understanding of making a film opening and not just a clip. To do this we have created a brand for the actual film getting the production company in the scene and the actors. At the start i would not have know that in the start of the film the 2 minutes would have involved all of the companies details.

After all of these lessons i have developed my understanding of technology and media. This has improved our new film opening making it look more professional.

How did you attract/ address your audience?

To attract our audience to our film we will do a lot of advertising so that the film gets heard about and to get people interested. As every other film, we will have a trailer which will be shown on YouTube but will not give too much away. Another way we are going to get our audience interested in the film is by having a website that will be updated each day with sections of images that will build up into the name of the film on the day of release.
Who would be the audience for your media product?

I believe that the audience for our media product would be around 15 -25 male because looking at other films similar to ours I can see that these are the main audiences for them. Because our film involves a lot of death and violence it will most likely attract a male audience because men are stereo-typically braver and more masculine so they will want to watch it.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I believe that our film would be distributed through lower end, lower budget film companies like
  •          Vertigo
  •         Film 4
  •       Working title film

By distributing our film through one of these company’s we would not really be competition with the big studios like
  •          Universal
  •          Dreamworks
  •          Walt Disney
  •         Paramount

I believe that doing this will be good for the film because the larger company’s audience will be looking for high quality products where as our product is slightly lower. It could also be shown online and ask for donations so that people can watch the film and we can still get money for it. By doing this it means that our film will get publicity because people will start to hear about it.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product?

Our film compares with “Saw” because both conform to typical stereotypes of a horror film being quite dark and mysterious. Another factor that is similar is the death, the narrative for our product has a lot of death throughout which is one of the main points to the story which is like “Saw”. We have seen the money that the “Saw” movies have made which is why we decided to go along the same lines. The film we have made uses a lot of fast camera movements and jump cuts which creates tension and fear for the audience which I thought was one of the best conventions of “Saw”. The rating for our film is ‘15’ which is not as high as any of the saw films which I believe will open up the range of audience that will see our film. In our film not too much is given away which builds up the tension in the audience and making them interested right up to the end. This is similar to “Saw” because the “villain” is shown as a mystery.

Our film does not compare to the horror film “Insidious” through the narrative because it is more of a supernatural horror whereas ours is a horror/ thriller but I believe that they will attract the same types of audience. Saying that the two films are completely different would be a lie because the camera shots and editing are both used in the same way to create the same effect on the audience. The editing used in both movies are jump cut to create a sense of fear among the viewing audience, making people jump is one on the main conversions of watching a horror especially in the cinema.  In some parts of “Insidious” to slow down the pace of the film long tracking shots are use, we also use this type of movement along with panning to show the audience the characters surroundings and to keep the audience interested. “Insidious” is another 18 rated film which is higher than our film.

I conclude that our film conforms to some typical stereotypes that other horror/ thrillers use but we use them in different areas to create other emotions among the audience.
